Moen 1222 vs 1225 Cartridge: How to Tell Which One You Need

Quick answer: The cartridge you need is determined by the valve type: a 1222 fits Posi-Temp valves, while a 1225 fits Standard or Moentrol valves. A 1222 system lacks volume control and has trim-plate screws at 2 and 7 o’clock, whereas a 1225 system includes pull-out volume control and screws at 5 and 7 o’clock.

If your shower handle is difficult to turn, fails to deliver hot water, or constantly drips long after you have turned it off, the culprit is almost certainly a worn-out internal cartridge. Replacing a moen shower valve cartridge is one of the easiest and most cost-effective DIY plumbing repairs you can undertake.

However, when homeowners go to purchase a replacement, they are often confronted with a confusing choice: Which part do you actually need? While some homeowners mistakenly search for a moen shower head cartridge, the component is actually located behind the wall inside the rough-in valve. For most modern Moen showers, the choice comes down to two specific models. Here is how to navigate the moen shower cartridge 1222 vs 1225 debate and identify the exact part required for your bathroom.

1. The Moen 1225 Cartridge (Moentrol & Standard Valves)

The Moen 1225 cartridge is designed for older standard Moen valves and the premium Moentrol valve systems.

How to identify it: The defining characteristic of a 1225 system is volume control. If you turn on your shower by pulling the handle out toward you, and then adjust the temperature by turning it left or right, you have a 1225 cartridge. You can push the handle slightly back in to reduce the water flow while maintaining the temperature.

Trim Kit Considerations: If you are updating your bathroom aesthetics without changing the plumbing in the wall, you must purchase a specific shower trim kit compatible with moen 1225 cartridge setups. The screw holes on a Moentrol trim plate are uniquely located at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions (bottom half of the circle).

Key Differences Between 1222 and 1225
Cartridge Valve Type Volume Control Trim Screw Positions
1225 Standard & Moentrol Yes (pull-out start, push-in flow) 5 o’clock & 7 o’clock
1222 Posi-Temp No (rotate only) 2 o’clock & 7 o’clock

2. The Moen 1222 Cartridge (Posi-Temp Valves)

The moen shower valve cartridge 1222 is the modern standard for most residential builder-grade and upgraded showers. It is used exclusively in Moen’s Posi-Temp valve systems.

An example in stock: the Moen Voss T2691BN Shower Valve Trim Posi-Temp Brushed Nickel.

How to identify it: A Posi-Temp valve does not have volume control. If your shower handle simply rotates counter-clockwise to turn on (starting cold and getting progressively hotter as you turn it further left), you need the 1222 cartridge. The handle does not pull outward.

Trim Kit Considerations: Trim plates for Posi-Temp (1222) valves have their mounting screw holes located at the 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions (diagonal from each other).

Changing the look instead of only the cartridge? A Moen Posi-Temp trim kit installs on the same Posi-Temp valve that uses the 1222, so the valve in the wall stays in place. In stock now: Moen TL183EP Chateau tub and shower trim in Chrome, Moen TL23569EP Chateau tub and shower trim, Moen T2692NH Voss shower only trim and Moen TS2201BN Doux trim in Brushed Nickel. All Posi-Temp and M-CORE options are in Shower Faucets & Trim Kits.

3. What About the Letters: Moen Shower Cartridge 1222 vs 1222b?

When shopping for parts, you might encounter another confusing variation: the moen shower cartridge 1222 vs 1222b.

Do not let the "B" confuse you—these are the exact same internal mechanical part. The only difference is the packaging. The "1222" is sold in retail blister packaging meant for store shelves, while the "1222B" stands for "Bulk" packaging, typically sold in plain cardboard boxes for professional plumbers. You can confidently buy whichever version is currently in stock or more affordable.

4. Tips for a Successful Replacement

Once you have identified the correct part, replacement is straightforward. Shut off the main water supply to your house. Remove the decorative handle and trim plate using an Allen wrench or Phillips screwdriver. You will then see a horseshoe-shaped metal retaining clip holding the cartridge in place; pull it straight up and out. Finally, use the plastic twisting tool included with your new cartridge to loosen the old unit, pull it straight out with pliers, and slide the new one in.
