Shower Valves & Rough-In

Moen shower valves, valve bodies and rough-in plumbing: Posi-Temp pressure-balancing valves, M-CORE valves, transfer and diverter valves, and roman tub rough-ins in 1/2-inch IPS, CC, and PEX connection types.

The valve goes in the wall during rough-in and determines which trim kits will fit later. Confirm the connection type and the number of outlets you need before ordering — trim is purchased separately.

Moen shower valves and rough-in plumbing

The rough-in valve is the part of a shower that gets built into the wall and stays there for decades. It controls temperature and routes water, and it decides which trim kits you can use later. This collection covers Moen valve bodies and rough-in components, including M-CORE valves.

Pressure-balancing and the platforms

Posi-Temp valves balance hot and cold pressure so the temperature does not jump when water is used elsewhere in the house. M-CORE valves are Moen's newer platform and accept 2-Series, 3-Series or 4-Series trim, which lets you change the style and number of controls later without replacing the valve.

Connections

Check whether the valve uses CC (copper sweat), IPS (threaded) or PEX connections, and that it matches the pipe in your wall. Some valves combine connection types.

Plan the height before tile

Valve height is set before the wall is closed. Moving it afterwards means opening tile, so settle the height, and whether you need a transfer valve for a handheld, before the wall goes up.

Useful guides: trim kit versus rough-in valve, where to position the valve before tiling, and valve versus diverter.

Questions we get about these

Does the valve come with a handle?
No. A rough-in valve is the part inside the wall. The handle and plate come in a separate trim kit.
Can I change trim style later?
Yes, within the same platform. An M-CORE valve accepts any M-CORE trim of the right series, so you can restyle without opening the wall.
What connection type do I need?
Match the pipe in your wall: copper sweat, threaded IPS, or PEX. The connection type is listed on each valve.
